Michael became homeless during 2017 for almost a year for the first time in his life. He explains how he was accepted and helped through the services and programs at the Lewis Center, which changed his life. “Homelessness is a problem in our community, I should know, I use to be one of them. Thank you for this opportunity for me to share with you my story” Michael said.
Discovering Your Potential Program
While attending Gulfstream Goodwill's Transition to Life Academy charter school in Boynton Beach, Celine was part of the culinary training program. Through her case management, Celine joined Gulfstream Goodwill's Discovering Your Potential (DYP) Program. DYP is a comprehensive training and employment program for individuals on the Autism Spectrum. Celine shares her success story with a twist that changed her life and gained meaningful employment.

At 15 years of age, Megan Johnson was diagnosed with scoliosis, a symptom of Friedreich’s Ataxia. By age 20, the condition, which causes progressive damage to the nervous system, required her to use a wheelchair for mobility. Through a series of employment searches and experiences, Megan turned to Gulfstream Goodwill Industries’ supported employment program in West Palm Beach, FL for assistance. As you watch Megan share her story, we congratulate her again for being the Goodwill Industries International’s 2017 recipient of the Edward J. Helms Award for Graduate Staff. “It’s just hard to put into words how great it feels to be able to be independent…and pay your own bills,” Megan said in describing her job.
Michael Merriman received services in our Supported Employment Program, through which he secured his job at Big Lake Hobbies in Okeechobee, Florida. And now he has been honored with the Goodwill Industries International 2018 Kenneth Shaw Graduate of the Year award. Learn his remarkable story.
